Needing his blessing to marry Gertrude, Grogan agreed to journey on foot from Cape Town in South Africa to the Egyptian capital Cairo. Gertrudes step-father dismissed Grogan as a "useless fortune hunter". He suffered an injury for which he travelled to New Zealand to recuperate, where he impressed his future wife Gertrude Watt with exaggerated tales of adventure. In 1896 Grogan volunteered for service in the Second Matabele War, in what is now modern-day Zimbabwe.
